The campaign office of Chula Vista mayoral candidate Zaneta Encarnación announced on Friday that San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria expressed his support toward her campaign.
“Zaneta has established herself as a leader who puts the needs of her community first,” Gloria said.
According to Gloria, the applicant "has spent nearly two decades defending families, both in the South Bay and throughout the region".
“I am confident that she is exactly the kind of bold and ambitious leader that Chula Vista needs right now, and I look forward to partnering with her to address our region's most critical issues like housing and infrastructure,” Gloria said.
The mayor of San Diego joined the list of Democratically elected officials who support Encarnación, according to his campaign office.
Other Democrats supporting her include outgoing Chula Vista Mayor Mary Casillas Salas; California Senate President Toni Atkins; and the president of the California Labor Federation, Lorena González, among others.
Zaneta Encarnación is a past president of the Chula Vista Rotary Club, a grassroots organizer, and currently serves as Southwestern College's chief of staff.
The candidate of Filipino descent faces five other candidates, who are contesting the primary election on June 7, and then the election for mayor of Chula Vista in November.
The current mayor, Mary Casillas Salas, will leave office in December after two terms in office at the head of Chula Vista and after meeting the deadline for mayor.
Mary Casillas Salas has made history as the first Latina to serve as mayor of the second-largest city in San Diego County.
