South Bay Sustainable Communities will host the following events to educate the community on its ecosystem, sustainable practices, and help keep Chula Vista green.
South Bay Sustainable Communities began last year with five communities and grew to about 12 with plans to expand to additional communities and school sites this coming year. As a nonprofit organization, its aim is to build healthy and sustainable communities through education and community engagement.
The following are free events and workshops aimed to educate the community and increase involvement. Members of the public who wish to participate in the following events must RSVP at (619)738-4188 or email SBSustainableCommunities@gmail.com.
Composting Class and Workshop:
Those interested in learning how to create their own may participate in the nonprofit’s Composting Class and workshop on Feb. 20th at 9 a.m. Pre-made compost is available for interested community members.
Community Clean-up at the DMV:
Students may earn community service hours and clean the community on Feb.26 at 8:30 a.m at the corner of C St. & N. Glover.
Local Nature hike and guided plant tour:
A Guided Nature and Native Plant hike guided by David DiDonato on Feb. 27th at the Del Rey Canyon Trails from 8-10 a.m. Hikers will trek through this little-known pocket canyon located on the South Side of H Street in Chula Vista. This canyon offers both the Coastal Sage Scrub and Chaparral Habitats with a moderately flat trail with an incline at the beginning and in the end. Hikers will see tree canopy tunnels and foot-bridges over creeks. Interested community members are asked to RSVP to receive directions to the trailhead.
Trim back your Milkweed:
Those who had to trim back tropical Milkweed in November will need to do it again.
“Biologists are now asking us to cut the Milkweed to the ground. They are finding that the OE parasite still lives in the stalk of the plant. Doing this won't hurt the plant, it will grow back in time for the monarchs return to So. Cal,” SBSC wrote in an email.
