The price of a regular gallon of self-serve gasoline has set records 11 days out of the previous 12 days, leaving San Diego County residents to pay a record $4.847 on average.

Gas prices increased half a cent on Monday, which brought the cumulative increases to 22.3 cents after rising 25 of the past 29 days. Monday’s increase broke a streak of price increases exceeding two cents, including 2.1 cents on Saturday and 2.9 cents on Friday, according to the AAA Oil Price Information Service.

On average, the price is 10.3 cents more than one week ago, 22.5 cents higher than one month ago, and $1.128 greater than one year ago.

According to GasBuddy, Chula Vista residents can find gas that is less than the county-wide average at San Diego Gasoline on 100 Bonia Rd for $4.39 per gallon of regular self-serve gasoline.

Costco cardholders will see $4.45 per gallon for regular self-serve gasoline at 895 E. H St and 1144 Broadway. Monday’s prices increased from Sunday when GasBuddy reported the average price at $4.39 a gallon for both Costco locations.

For only a few cents higher, residents can find gasoline for $4.48 at The Tote on 4430 Main St, and $4.49 at Arco on 3190 Main St.

Prices for San Diego Gasoline and The Tote remained unchanged since Sunday.

“The escalation of tensions into all-out war has pushed up Brent Crude prices above $100 a barrel and if that trend continues, we could see gas prices start going up more quickly,” Auto Club spokesman Doug Shupe said in a statement Thursday morning.

On Thursday, President Joe Biden addressed the nation and said that sanctions were tailored not to disrupt the oil and gas markets, the Associated Press reported.

The Los Angeles Times reported that California doesn’t import any oil from Russia, but the loss of a major exporter shrinks global supplies, which could affect prices at a local level. According to Shupe, gasoline prices on the West Coast are at their lowest levels of 2022.

In connection with the record-high prices, the Automobile Club of Southern California is reminding drivers "to implement fuel efficiency tips into their daily routines,” according to Shupe.

  • Keeping vehicles well-maintained such as properly inflated tires, removing excess weight from vehicles that are not needed for trips;
  • Avoiding jackrabbit starts and not speeding;
  • Parking in the shade or using a window sunscreen to lessen heat build-up in your vehicle;
  • Combining errands into fewer trips per day, and;
  • Looking around for the cheapest gas by looking for less expensive gas stations that aren’t too far out of your way.
