The United Food and Commercial Workers union (UFCW) said it reached a tentative agreement with supermarket chains without providing details until Tuesday morning.
"We will publish more information about this historic and transformational agreement. However, nothing is final until our members decide," UFCW told Chula Vista Today in a statement.
The agreement represents some 47,000 workers at more than 500 supermarkets in Southern California, from north Los Angeles to the Mexican border.
If the union endorses the agreement, the option to strike at supermarket chains Ralphs, Albertsons, Vons, Pavilions, Stater Bros., and Gelson's for a three-year collective contract disappears.
"We are incredibly proud of our essential grocery members, whose hard work and determination to stick together, and willingness to fight for what they deserve have made this agreement possible," UFCW Local 135, said.
Ralphs vice president of field operations, Robert Branton said "We are pleased that this agreement allows us to put more money into our associates' paychecks and secures health care and pension plans."
The previous three-year collective agreement ended on March 7. The union demanded a $5 per hour wage increase for the next contract, while the supermarkets' initial offer was a raise of only 60 cents.
Some workers mentioned that a gradual increase was accepted over the next three years but did not specify amounts.
The union will now bring the agreement terms to the workers for review and approval.
