Bi-national leaders celebrated the expansion of a processing facility at the Cross Border Xpress Sky Bridge (CBX) to the Tijuana International Airport (TIJ), estimated at $100 million, to aim to reduce wait time.

The highly anticipated expansion gives people a chance to cross the border between the U.S. and Mexico faster at a time when passenger traffic at the airport is climbing. It is a 430,000 square-foot addition that will help process passengers at the bridge.

The multi-million dollar expansion adds six new immigration booths, five new customs lines, two new boarding gates, and 52 check-in counters.

According to Jorge Goytortua, CEO of CBX, the new addition will expand the capacity and make it easier for travelers with new technology and more space. In 2021, the CBX saw more than 2.7 million travelers, and officials estimate by 2034, more than 17 million will transfer through TIJ.

San Diego Tourism Authority president and CEO Julie Coker said “the expansion really is going to move people through faster”.

“For San Diegans, it gives you another option because they are pursuing international flight that we might not be able to get here in San Diego so it gives you a few more options. Oftentimes, the flights out of CBX are slightly less than what we are able to charge here,” Cocker said.

The private terminal recently added a COVID-19 rapid testing site for California-bound travelers 2 years and older in Otay Mesa.
