If you're a vegan in San Diego, then you are in luck: San Diego tops PETA’s 2022 list of the Top 10 Vegan-Friendly Beach Towns in the nation, the animal rights advocacy nonprofit organization announced this week.

The group lauded San Diego’s vegan festivals, eateries, and animal-free fare, and sent an awards certificate to the city’s Mayor Todd Gloria.

“From quick and easy street food to international cuisine, the restaurants in America’s Finest City are dishing up some of the best vegan food for holidaymakers and residents,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “San Diego joins all the other great beach towns on PETA’s list that are hot spots for the animal-friendly fare people are craving this summer.”

In August, San Diego celebrates vegan dining with its International Vegan Film Festival & Dinner, and the Encinitas Vegan Food Popup in August and September. The city will soon host the Reggae Vegan Fest in 2023.

PETA highlights several vegan-friendly eateries, including Rollin RootsGrains, the YasaiVeggie Grill, and Peace Pies for those with a sweet tooth. According to PETA’s spokeswoman Nicole Meyer, consumers’ demand for vegan food has grown two and a half times faster in 2021 than it did between 2018 and 2020, and it’s expected to reach $22 billion by 2025.

Other cities that made PETA’s Top 10 Vegan-Friendly Beach Towns are Atlantic City, New Jersey; Charleston, South Carolina; Galveston, Texas; Grand Haven, Michigan; Long Beach, New York; Nags Head, North Carolina; Newport, Rhode Island; Santa Cruz, California; and West Palm Beach, Florida.

Just last year, San Diego ranked 10th on a report ranking the best U.S. Cities for Vegans and Vegetarians, California cities that ranked above San Diego include Oakland, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.
