Chula Vista homeowners Bryan and Denee Felber won the Otay Water District’s 2022 Water Smart Landscape Contest after transforming their water-guzzling grass turf yard into a drought-tolerant garden.

The couple’s efforts earned them recognition as “Best in the District” after transforming their 2,143 square feet of turf into a water-saving garden that beautifies the neighborhood. Represented by Board Director and Treasurer Jose Lopez, the couple resides in the Otay Water District’s division 4.

“It’s easier and requires much less time to maintain and it saves money,” said Bryan in a press release. “Designed well, it can be beautiful with far less water, reducing water demand, and preserving its supply.”

The Felber's made the money-saving switch in 2015 after being hit with high maintenance costs for their green and grassy lawn. They joined the San Diego Water Authority’s WaterSmart Landscape Makeover Program to learn how to make a low-water-use yard, according to the Otay Water District.

Upon approval of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California’s Turf Replacement Program, the couple received a rebate to replace 5,007 square feet of their front and back yards. The Felber's eventually replaced an additional 202 square feet of their side yard.

“Their completed landscape has allowed the Felbers to reduce their overall water use by approximately 33% compared to the years before upgrading,” wrote the Otay Water District in a statement.

The Felbers will be recognized at the Otay Water District’s August board meeting with a certificate of recognition, a gift certificate to a local nursery of their choice, a yard sign, and other promotional items.
