San Diego County Board of Supervisors recently voted unanimously to proceed with applying for $11.6 million in state funding to upgrade the Tijuana River Valley, Regional Park.
The state funds will be applied to a planned $37 million improvement project at the 64-acre park and green space, which is located in the Nestor community of South San Diego. The project is scheduled for 2023-24 for design and 2025-26 for construction.
In a statement, Board of Supervisors Chairman Nathan Fletcher wrote, “ Our continued pursuit of new funding and planned investments to improve County parks ensures families have beautiful, safe spaces to enjoy the outdoors,” said Chair Fletcher. “The Tijuana River Valley Regional Park will be an even better place for people to go with these funds. I am hopeful the State of California will be supportive of our vision for our parks in San Diego County.”
According to the county, the community park will provide opportunities to engage in recreational activities that promote healthy, active living and reduce the risk of chronic diseases and stress.
“The proposed project will expand active recreation opportunities in an area that does not currently have sufficient access to such programming,” the county wrote in a staff report.
Under the county's Experience the Outdoors program, the Tijuana River Valley Regional Park is scheduled to be featured as part of the Parks 101 First-timer Series for camping this October and next June for a gardening demo.
It will also be featured in the Rad Regional Parks event series next year.
