The City of Chula Vista is poised to unveil a new modern outdoor Fitness Court that allows users to leverage their own body weight to complete a workout.

The newest addition to the city's recreation spaces will be unveiled at Rohr Park on Sept. 13 at 10 a.m., with a supporting mobile app. According to the city, the project replaces outdated exercise equipment that has been present at the park for decades.

City officials said the project is a featured part of a 2022 initiative launched by the National Fitness Campaign (NFC), a nationwide consulting organization that partners with cities and schools to plan, build and fund health infrastructures. Users of this new outfoor space can use the Fitness Court App, which operates like a personal coach to guide people through the outdoor gym.

Chula Vista was selected from hundreds of applicants nationwide to be awarded a $30,000 grant from NFC to support the program. Measure P Tax funds funded the remaining $150,000.

There are currently 100 active fitness court locations nationwide, but the goal is to reach a total of 5000 cities and schools by the end of 2022, according to the campaign.

City officials said residents are invited to attend the opening day launch to try the fitness court and learn about community wellness events and programming. Residents will also see a mural from local artists Paul and Signe of Ground Floor Murals.
