Age Friendly Chula Vista is celebrating older adults ages 55 years and older in a new program “We Are Chula Vista: A Celebration of Our Older Adults,” by showcasing the website and banners across the city starting next year.
Nominations of older adults will be accepted through Jan. 28 2022 and all submittals will be featured on the website and photos of dozens of older adults will be featured on light pole banners next year.
The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Community Challenge grant funded the program. The grant affirms the City’s commitment to building and nurturing age- friendly communities by displaying appreciation for older adults.
“This program ensures that the older adults in our lives know that they are appreciated for the important role they have in our community,” said Chula Vista Mayor Mary Casillas Salas.
Recently, Chula Vista launched CV Senior Connect which serves as a hotline to connect seniors to resources and programming by calling (619) 409-1932. Both programs add to the effort in fulfilling the City’s Age-Friendly Action Plan.
The Chula Vista Senior Connect Phone line, (619) 409-1932, was created through the city’s partnership with 211 San Diego and funding from the San Diego Foundation’s Age Friendly Communities Program. The city entered the AARP Age Friendly Communities network in 2016 and adopted an Action Plan in 2018 which aims to improve the quality of life for residents.
“CV Senior Connect serves as a one stop shop for our senior community to memorize one number in order to access an abundance of services and participate in our community,” said Chula Vista Mayor Mary Casillas Salas. “The City and our partners are excited about the opportunity to serve and engage an even larger number of seniors in the community through this informational phone line.”
Residents can make nominations of the older adults on the city's webpage.
